About this Event

Where Ancient Craft Meets Appropriate Technology

This is an experimental workshop, and we want to be clear: we're learning together. The goal is to convert our existing pottery kiln to incorporate rocket mass heater principles, potentially reducing fuel consumption by 70% or more.

What We'll Do

Over two intensive days, we'll work together to modify the kiln's combustion chamber and heat riser. Kai Nakamura will lead the ceramics and kiln design aspects, while we'll have a rocket stove specialist guiding the conversion.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is best suited for people with some background in either ceramics, masonry, or appropriate technology. It's hands-on and physically demanding. You'll leave with knowledge applicable to building your own efficient firing systems.

The Experiment

After the conversion, we'll do a test firing. Results may vary, that's the nature of experimental work. But whether it succeeds brilliantly or teaches us what to do differently, everyone present will be part of pushing this craft forward.
