The Art of Slow: Building with Cob

Last month, a small crew spent a week on the land building a cob bench near the fire circle. Cob is an ancient building material: just clay, sand, straw, and water, mixed with your feet and shaped by hand.

There's no rushing cob work. You mix a batch, shape it onto the structure, and then wait for it to dry before adding more. The rhythm is meditative: stomp, shape, smooth, wait. Repeat.

The bench isn't perfectly symmetrical, and that's part of its beauty. You can see the handprints of everyone who helped build it. That imperfection is a feature, not a bug. It tells the story of the people who made it.

We're planning more natural building projects in the coming year. If you're interested in learning these old-new skills, keep an eye on our events calendar.
